Ingredients

Main Base
  • 1 pound 450g lean ground beef (80/20 blend): Provides rich beefy flavor without making the dish too greasy.
  • 1 medium yellow onion diced: Adds sweet, aromatic depth to the meat mixture.
  • 3 cloves garlic minced: Brings a punchy, savory bite to the base.
  • 4 cups Russet potatoes peeled and thinly sliced: Starchy potatoes absorb the creamy sauce perfectly and hold their shape.
The Sauce
  • 1 can 10.5 oz condensed cream of mushroom soup: Creates a thick, savory gravy that binds everything together.
  • 1/2 cup whole milk: Thins the soup just enough to coat the potatoes evenly.
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce: Enhances the meaty flavor with tangy umami notes.
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt: Draws out the natural flavors of the ingredients.
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper: Adds a gentle warm spice.
Toppings
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese freshly grated: Melts into a sharp, gooey, golden crust.
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley chopped: Adds a pop of bright green color and fresh flavor before serving.

Method

  1. Step 1: Prep your space and oven. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with non-stick spray or butter.
  2. Step 2: Brown the meat. Place a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the beef and diced onion. Cook for 5-7 minutes until the meat is browned and no pink remains. Drain any excess grease.
  3. Step 3: Add the aromatics. Stir the minced garlic into the skillet. Cook for exactly 1 minute until highly fragrant. Remove the skillet from the heat.
  4. Step 4: Mix the savory sauce. In a medium bowl, whisk the cream of mushroom soup, milk, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Stir until smooth and creamy.
  5. Step 5: Assemble the layers. Spread half of the sliced potatoes evenly in the prepared baking dish. Top with the cooked beef mixture. Pour half of the creamy sauce over the meat. Add the remaining potatoes, then cover with the rest of the sauce.
  6. Step 6: Bake covered. Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil. Bake for 35 minutes. The foil traps steam, ensuring the potatoes become perfectly tender.
  7. Step 7: Melt the cheese. Remove the foil carefully to avoid hot steam. Sprinkle the grated cheddar cheese evenly over the top. Return the dish to the oven, uncovered.
  8. Step 8: Final bake. Bake for 10-15 more minutes. Watch for bubbling edges and a golden, melted cheese crust. Let it rest for 5 minutes, garnish with parsley, and serve.
